Synopsis: REKORDER tells the story of a former 1980’s film cameraman who now currently works as a movie pirate operating in present day Manila. He routinely smuggles a digital camcorder into movie theaters in order to illegally record films. One night he records something else… And the footage goes viral.

Through dreams I escape (2011)

Made this in tribute to my semestral break.

Tomorrow is the start of my last semester in college (well, hopefully). It’s despairing to enter my last semester in college for the reason that last week I just lost a family member. As a matter of fact, it’s my first time to lose a family member.

It’s the -BER months as well—I should be celebrating to commemorate my last semester. For some reason, college was never fun for me. Most people have this notion that college is all about partying and being wild. I never had that luxury of time rather I spend it at home or do something productive or just plainly rest. Family is always top priority that is why, I would believe, that I did not experience the total college experience. Do I regret it? Not a single bit. It is just painful to think that I lost a member of the family because they are my only real friends.

I experience a sharp pang of grief when I recall the times I spent with my Tito. His name is Jonas Maniquis. Our family has a complicated situation but we can safely say that he has become my beta father since my biological father left when I was around 8 yrs. old. We had this unspoken relationship of kindness. He is nice to my family and in gratitude we welcomed him to our family. He helped me throughout my adolescence. It’s funny how we only call to mind the good things a person has done for us when it is too late. Sometimes we take people for granted and that is why when they are not there anymore it feels like there is a piece of the puzzle that is missing.

He taught me how to paint and be confident of my abilities. I had doubts of pursuing a career in the artistic field because of several reasons. He, however, supported me and pushed me to pursue what I really want in life. In my first year in college as a fine arts student he would always lend a helping hand even if he was busy with something else.

In a way he is the great equalizer of our home because our family is mostly composed of girls. He would stand as the man of the house who would handle different house duties like fetching me in Pasig at Mik’s house or doing the grocery. He is more a part of this family that anyone ever was. Although we were not blood related, we had this mutual understanding. It is just sad that I didn’t have the guts to tell him all of this when he was still alive.

It was all too sudden.

The night before he died I was with him along with my family. We went to my province in Bataan not to spend All Souls’ Day but because I forced my family to. I wanted to go to Bataan for my thesis. He did not tell me he was feeling ill during that time because if he did I wouldn’t have been so makulit to them about it. Even if he was enduring pain, he gave time to my family.

“Sama ako sa shoot mo ha” He said. He was always there to help. I did not have to ask.

Hence I dedicate my thesis and my last semester to him. To the person who loved my Mother and my family dearly, we will miss you! Memories will always be treasured!

Hello Vacation! (Sembreak for me starts on the 22nd)

If I’m lucky, this will be my last semestral break.

It’s actually bizarre that I am hampered by pursuing my dreams. As an artist, it is of paramount importance to invest time to flourish your talent. College is always important and a degree is nice. But what is crucial is actually flourishing your talent, building your portfolio, your career, and not hindering yourself from pursuing your dreams. Go for it! This is in connection to my pending graduation (by pending I mean I haven’t received my grades yet LOLd). I realized one thing… if I do get a chance to graduate, I get to boast about something I worked hard for for 4 straight years. If not, I reckon I can still pursue my dreams even without it. Point of the matter is… don’t let anything or anyone curb your dreams. Fight for your dreams and some day.. some how.. someone will recognize the talent you have.

Here is a business card I made 2 weeks ago for a client-friend. Since my friend does not want to disclose any information, I used my name as to show how the calling card looks like with the complete information. I kinda went berserky on the illustration at the back… very whimsical looking…
